Legendary musician Prince died today at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota, according to a report first broken by TMZ. He was 57. The death has since been confirmed by Prince’s agent.
The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist had been battling health issues of late; last Friday, his jet was forced to make an emergency landing in Illinois and he was rushed to a hospital, though he appeared to have been recovering well.
Prince’s impact on popular music is incalculable. He became well-known for infusing his music with sexuality, at one point changing his name to the “Love Symbol,” and for melding elements of funk, dance, R&B and rock music to create masterful pop songs. His 1980s albums 1999 and Purple Rain are widely considered masterpieces.
